indeed this is good for apple...
I still want a CAM program for the mac. Currently there is none available on the mac platform. If apple computers are getting corporate attention then a CAM might be closer then I think among other things that could use better support.

Can't wait for the Ramadan Rush Sales!

Lighten up PC police.Bite me. People need to have more tolerance to other religions. Period. Christianity is not the only religion on the planet, though some seem to think it should be.

Don't the movie studios operate as commercial businesses? Don't they make a profit (overall - some movies flop I know)?

They couldn't affort to spend $100M/movie if they didn't get the money back!

Therefore, iPod sales are 'extra' income for them.

I know that there may be some drop-off in theatre ticket sales if the same movie is available via iPod sometime in the future, but don't they face this now with DVD sales?

It may be simplistic, but why not hold back offering the on-line sale of the movie until they have exhausted the 'theatre experience' the way they do with DVD sales, and then get ready for the '2nd wave' of additional income.

I agree that you should pay for what you have, but I also think you should get what you pay for without excessive restrictions. Yes, electronic media differs from physical media and some rules should be different, but the underlying principles stay the same.

    Susan

Except that iPod/iTMS sales would represent, generally speaking, the loss of a DVD sale. They would love, I am sure, to ONLY sell through iTMS and similar services, assuming:

    1) They sold the same number of copies,
    2) They had the same or great profit margin, and
    3) They had better/stricter copy protection.

On that note, I'm still amazed no one has reverse engineered the iTMS video copy protection scheme. I hear DVDJohn has done it, but is using his powers for "good" (well, his good) and selling it to companies who want to offer DRM'd video for playback on iPods without going through Apple.

iPhone - revolutionary in that it raises the bar VERY high for other manufacturers...But it still smells like first generation to me. Behind the arguably flawless design, usability and performance issues are already being raised. Kudos to Steve and his enormously talented staff, but I'll pass on early adoption. But slick..oh so slick..No one is as good as SJ for coordinating such a project. Now let's see how it sells.
It does raise the bar for other manufacturers, but this isn't the portable media player market. In business you either have to be the first, or the cheapest (neither applies to iPhone), simply being the best doesn't cut it. Apple and its devotees have argued for ages that MacOS is so superior to Windows it's ridiculous, but they've never managed to even put a dent in Microsoft's market share.

With the iPod Apple was able to hog 60% of the market before the competition even woke up, but here they're up against Nokia, SonyEricsson, Motorola, Siemens, Blackberry, Palm/Treo, HP and a bunch of other giants with well established distribution channels and deals with every carrier on earth. I hope for Apple's sake they've patented the crap out of this thing because the first SonyEricsson iPhone killer is probably being designed as we speak.

BTW, was there any mention of games on this thing? Without games, kids aren't touching the iPhone with a ten foot pole, and aging businessmen who always groan over buttons being too small may not be into the idea of *no* buttons.

FANTASTIC news. As big a pile of crap as Notes/Domino is, I'm stuck with it at work, and being the lone Mac dude just makes things worse. Notes on the Mac platform is sorry right now, and some improvements would be much appreciated.

I'd love to some day see Domino Administrator ported to Mac.

Has anyone had a close look at the main picture on Apple's preview page? The sender of the email in the top pane is 'Katie Lorenzo' but in the preview pane her name is 'Amy Lorenzo'. Also, the delivery time is out by almost an hour.

    Comments?

obviously, Katie's sister Amy took the honeymoon picture.

    :)

i pre-ordered mine at the beginning of october, and got it this morning (engraving and all--wow, small engraving font!). very positive first impression.

i can see why some people complain about the clip at first: you expect it to be like a binder clip. i think apple's design is actually fine. there's a decent amount of force when the clip is wide open, and then when it's almost closed there's less force, the majority of its fastening power being supplied by the overlapping "teeth." for its intended use--clipping to clothes--i think it's great. whether it will clip successfully to other materials i think depends on the thickness (thicker is better up to a quarter inch or so), pliability (so the teeth can catch some material), and whether there is a thicker edge to catch onto. works flawlessly clipped on a shirt collar, any pocket, a flap with a thick edge, belt loop, anything you can clip it onto pointing down, etc. not so great on pinches of fine fabric. of course there's barely any weight to jostle it off. i expect no problems.

sound quality of course is fine. haven't bought an ipod since '03, so i was pleasantly surprised by the "old" headphones' cord adjuster (you can cinch it up so that the left/right cords are held together up to a point of your choosing--is that new?). i ordered one of those pairs of logitech bluetooth headphones that are super cheap on account of their fragility, and am very excited to try to rig up a cordless gym-going system.

the little dock is quite nice. pleasantly weighty for such a tiny form factor, and has a bottom surface that really seems to grip my desk, which is great--reassures you that it won't blow away or tip over.

i think once again apple's done a great job of providing more control and info than you would expect out of such a simple interface. my favorite example: hitting the "play/pause" button three times takes you to a random song (in shuffle mode), or to the first song in your list (in standard mode--very useful!) this is probably not new, but i didn't know about it before and like it a lot. you can also press and hold the play/pause button to toggle the hold mode (shutting off responsiveness of the buttons). and unplugging headphones automatically pauses playback.

itunes 7.0.2 worked great to load it up (though being used to my 3rd gen ipod i miss the speed of firewire). now when i plug in the shuffle there are two tabs at the top of the content window--one for settings and one for content.

so overall i love it. if forced, i could come up with 1.5 complaints. 1) the engraving is kind of hard to read--small, part of it just slightly fuzzy. .5) though i totally don't expect it to slip from wherever i clip it, i would probably feel more secure if the clip were a bit stronger.

A lot of us here really like cars and the automotive world. This thread is for sharing pics of cars you like or dislike. Cool cars, ugly cars, sexy cars, whatever. So, if your friends have some cool cars, or you've recently been to a car show or meet, or just want to talk about cars in general, feel free to do so here. That way the "Pictures of YOUR car" (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1073387) thread can continue to be where people post their own personal cars, and this thread will be for all the other stuff.

    I'll start...

The new BMW M5 Concept was revealed today. Like many of BMW's concepts, though, the real car will look very similar to this when revealed. I love the look of the new F10 5-series, and this new M version is even better. Great looking, as usual from the M Division...

Also, Pagani has recently revealed the car that will replace the aging Zonda. That was an utterly amazing car, so it will take a lot to top that. With the new Huayra, though, it seems as though they did. Not quite as flamboyant and wild as the Zonda, but hardly any less sexy. This is a SPECTACULAR looking car, and the interior is possibly my favorite on any road car, EVER!! Amazing....

I've had my 5th gen. iPod video for about five years now, and it's treated me well; until last night. I was lying in bed listening to music, and I wanted to skip the song, so I pushed the forward button. Nothing happens. I try it again; the iPod freezes for about 20 seconds, then totally powers down, and makes a clicking noise (sounds like a drive maybe?).

Now, every time I turn the iPod on, I get the Apple logo, and it immediately goes to the "Connect to your computer, use iTunes to restore" screen, and after about 10 seconds, it powers off, again making the same whine/click noise. It's in a loop with this.

If I plug it into my computer, it doesn't read whatsoever; nothing on my desktop, nothing in iTunes, but the iPod itself goes to disk mode with a white screen and a "do not disconnect" sign. I cannot seem to get it out of disk mode, let alone get my computer to recognize it, so I can't restore it. I have a Macbook, and I've tried to restore it using other computers (several Windows systems) and it recognizes a "USB mass storage device", but doesn't appear in iTunes or anywhere else.

I've tried doing the manual reset, tried diagnostics mode, and to no avail. It's stuck in disk mode in a perpetual loop every time I turn it on, and NO computers will recognize it.

I have a really old 3GB iPod mini that I got years ago, so that's been my replacement for the past 24 hours— problem is, 3GB hardly compares to the 30GB that was on my iPod video; I can't even fit a quarter of my library on it. I'm kind of upset about it, I mean, I know that 5 years is quite awhile, but I've taken extremely good care of the device. It's been in a protective case ever since I got it, and I rarely drop it. I use it about every day. Any ideas on what I can do? To my understanding, if the hard drive has crashed, a sad iPod logo will appear, and that hasn't happened yet, so... who knows? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I don't really want to pay Apple to repair it because I may as well buy a new iPod (which I won't be able to do for quite awhile, broke college student here).

Sadly, like Dr. Jones, I can offer no proof of it until tomorrow (when it won't matter ;) ).

My Verizon contact showed me his production white CDMA IP4 last night and indicated they would in fact go on sale in the US on 4/27.

He went on to confirm rumors I've read here and elsewhere that the paint issue was a red herring. The proximity sensor was the problem all along and is a complete redesign on the white phone.

Yes, dressing like a slut is a freedom in the Western World. This however does not mean it is a good idea. A woman who dresses like a slut is advertising that the best thing about them is their body. I don't know about y'all, but I value more than looks so someone who dresses in such bad taste is clearly a thing to avoid.

On the other hand I go out of my way to help women who act and dress well because it is more conductive to business. Ever tried to conduct a business meeting where a woman shows up dress very promiscuously? Seems I'm the only one who can concentrate in those kinds of settings.

You do realize that all social interactions are not business transactions right?

The criticism of the Cloud, is the user is yielding control to someone else.

But to sell it as, "be the king of your castle" in the cloud, suggest more user control, and security.
